Champions are *supposed* to be multi-type.

Wallace is the only who isn't. Sure, Lance, Iris, Alder and Steven may have a theme, but they jump off the type bandwagon for at least half of their teams.

Champions usually have a theme, but rarely a type:

Blue - Trend not established yet, just rolls with some of the the top fully-evolved, intimidating-style borderline edgy-ish Pokemon. And wide type coverage. Like what most player characters would roll with, truly a rival to Red.

Lance - Dragon-like Pokemon, but not neessarily dragons. Three of the same species for dragons. Uses other dragon-like Pokemon for better type coverage.

Steven - They say Steel, but Rock is equally true. Two fossils as well. All hard and ancient-looking defensive Pokemon.

Wallace - All Water-types, and mostly based on deep-sea creatures.

Cynthia - Pokemon will mostly a sleek and elegant nature, with slight femininity, but without being a "girly" team.

Alder - Likes Bugs, but mostly likes rugged, wild-animal, exotic looking Pokemon with fi.repower

Iris - Another Dragon-type master, but More of a dinosaur theme, Lapras and Archeops support this point. The theme is prehistoric.

Diantha is like a cross between Cynthia and Iris. She has a very slight dinosaur/dragon theming, but a team filled will tough Pokemon and a touch of elegance.

Yeah, Cynthia is like Blue in that she has no discernible theme. Even Alder, who comes close, leans toward the Bugs.

Everyone else has an easily deduced preference that then fans out for more type coverage so you can't steamroll them.

Yeah, I'd say Cynthia's team is more focused around being "Elite".
While maybe not in terms of the Metagame's OU, she does use all-around very good Pokemon that are all notable in some way.

They're also all incredible rare pokemon at that.

Pokemon that share common traits but not necessarily common types. Type Gyms made sense to reinforce the then-new concept of the rock-paper-scissors gameplay, but by now, it makes little sense for any apparently-consummate elite trainer to put all his eggs in one basket (type).

I don't think that's really the point anyone is making when they say that cynthia is the strongest champion.

Any metagaming asshole can spend 20 minutes on Smogon and come up with a team that could absolutely wreck any of the champions.

Cynthia is the best champion because her team is fairly well balanced and strong with max IVs, and is the most likely to pose a problem to unprepared players or people who play through the game somewhat underlevelled/with a less-than-competitively-viable team.

The problem is that you forgot to apply your logic to the rest of the champions.

The champion should have the most diverse team possible. All other trainers in the game are somewhat specialized, using one or two types like Sailors almost always using water and fighting or Bikers using poison and dark, the Champion should be unique from them all.
