We all have to learn anon. I didn't start using status effects until I had played the games for a couple years (I was 7 when Red and Blue came out)

Once you get to the later gyms, it becomes much more efficient to just attack instead of lowering opponent's stats.

I honestly used to be the person who had all 4 moves that do nothing but damage until very recently.
I don't really play other people, I always just do in game stuff so there hasn't been very much of a need.

Honestly, I don't like status attacks that affect opposing pokemon because then you have to use them again after you KO one. I'll use a status move that buffs my mon though so I can take out like 3 pokes without switching.

Status moves aren't really useful in-game. Only moves that induce status problems are any good.

Moves like Leer are situational at best and utterly worthless at worst. Considering at the beginning of the game you are better off typically just bashing each others faces in with attacks that is in the end going to make you receive less damage overall (assuming you are stronger). Move that buff your Pokemon, Status effect, and moves that sharply cut enemies X,Y and Z are another story entirely though.

Unless you are using Pokemon like that as sacrificial lambs just to drop other pokemon stats then it would probably be best spent instead dealing damage in the long run, at least at the beginning of the game anyway.
