HOW DO EVS WORK IN THIS GEN?

Do the old methods on EV training still work?
Is there a machine to use to determine EVs and IVS?
How long does it take to fully train a stat with this new mini game?
Does it cost anything?

The game is pretty casual in most aspects already. Always has been. Even simple combos like Swift Swim and rain are too fucking intense for competitive. EVs being trained is fantastic. You're just going to have to deal with GF taking forever to discover people care about IVs, just like they did with EVs.

I've been messing around a bit with EVs but how the hell do you guys go about finding pokemon with good IVs? Do you just catch and hatch a bunch of the same pokemon, get the judge to tell you the potential and throw the rest away? Seems tedious.

I get Dittos with really high IV's, breed until I get a decent stat baby, breed with that baby, continuous repeat, you can pass down a single stats IV with an item though

Iterative breeding.
Get dittos with good IVs
Breed them with a parent
Check each baby
Get one with good IVs to go fuck its opposite gendered parent
Check each baby
Get one with good IVs to go fuck its opposite gendered parent

And so on.

Eventually you'll end up with some good starting parents from each egg group. (the baby is the same species as the female, unless there are dittos involved, so males are useful as IV-passing or move-passing parents)

Haha, even breeding for the right nature with nothing to breed off is fucking agonizing. Imagine throwing Masterballs into forever.

I like to soft reset for the right nature with event legendaries though. I dont even really use legendaries for anything besides to fly around on.

I don't use legendaries either but yeah, right nature would be annoying enough on it's own let alone IV's and then fuckers also have shinies on top of it. Natures are really easy though as long as you have the Dittos, I've streamlined the process quite well in White 2 which is what makes not being able to move items over really frustrating.

Legendaries should have perfect IVs. They're banned from most non-smogon, non-hacked competitive anyway. That way you could reset until you got the Nature you want and not go insane either retrying to infinity or abusing the RNG (which really, though it takes skill and know-how, is really only a step above shit like Pokesav. It's still fabricating a nearly perfect 'mon, it's just much more "legal).

For the most part yeah, I have certain Dittos that will have max attack, defense, etc. Some that are just outstanding overall IV's and at least 1 for every nature, at least the nature's I have needed

That's a lot. But yeah, the whole thing is a mess. It's why I can never get into competitive because I know there are people willing to spend all that time ultra breeding the perfect pokemon on top of EV training.

It's not really "that" much time, you don't have to get perfect IV's, I only have a couple hundred hours to get 15 level 100's and I've spent a lot of time just on getting multiple life orbs and shit

Yes. Each time an egg is produced, it takes three IVs at random from the parents, and the other three IVs are completely randomly generated. Power items let you pick one IV to guarantee passing down. So having two flawless parents means your baby will definitely have three perfect IVs, after that its down to luck.

That would kind of be nice but some people, for example in trick room teams, intentionally go for lower speed. Giving special attackers low Attack for confusion and foul play happens too.

The baby inherits 3 IVs from the parents in total, which parent it inherits the IVs from is also random.
By using the hold items to pass on an IV you guarantee that one IV to pass on from the 3 chosen from the parents.
The other three IVs not taken from the parents are created with RNG.

I don't even consider it cheating that much as long as they keep the numbers fair. All it removes from the equation is pure time. It's like in Final Fantasy games where the only thing left to do is grind in order to get something like a mastered materia. Why waste time when I can just click "master materia" and arrive at the same conclusion? I understand the whole "do it yourself" feeling but it feels too tedious for me.

Competitive was already at it's peak mid 4th into early 5th gen. Now it's just an assload of newfag casuals thinking they are good and original. The hype and fun just arent there anymore. Play just for the story and in game stuff.
Tl:Dr no nee to worry about ev's unless you're just trying to wall/one shot anything you'll encounter in game.

You burn through in-game content in a couple days and all of it follows a really predictable pattern. Sure theres an aspect of adventure but thats over pretty soon.

Making the perfect pokemon, playig competitive, and doing the Battle Frontier and similar with my friends is where its at.

Just playing with an actual copy of the game is much simpler when playing with friends. You use sims for randoms/practice and testing stuff you want to breed in-game.

And why wouldn't you just do both in the first place if you enjoy playing competitively anyway? Why do you HAVE to choose one?

Using a sim to play competitive is quicker; you find battles lightning fast. You are surrounded by people who WANT to play competitively. And; most likely people who are actually good at it. All items/pokes are available immediately; and you can allocate your 510 evs right then and there; however you'd like. Sure; it isn't as aestetically pleasing as the actual game. But people play PO/PS purely for competitive skill. No one who plays competitive seriously gives a damn about in game aesthetics. It's all about the challenge of playing good players. Also; sims follow tiers. Which helps greatly when playing randoms/friends in a battle. So again, if you're going to play competitive, why aren't you using a sim?
