what are some Pokemon characters - in the games or anime - that you consider to be among truly great literary characters? Personally, I think that Mewtwo, as he is portrayed in the movie Mewtwo Strikes Back, is one of the most poignant characters I've ever encountered. There is a profound sadness about his existence, and even in his angry moments you can see it in his face and hear it in his voice. It's a really original concept that has been mimicked a lot since - humans trying to create a powerful weapon that goes out of hand due to it's emotions (Shadow, anyone?) The armor they make him wear represents the chains humanity has placed on his purpose, you can really see this reflected in some of the dialogue. His plight not only makes me question the motives of humanity in genetical engineering, but also grips me with nostalgia for seeing the movie as a kid.
