Let's discuss why we hate Smogon /vp/.

This motherfucker right here. They banned it outright. Don't get me wrong I know Speed Boost breaks it but I love using this bastard.

If they can make stupid specific shit bans like Sand Veil and Swift Swim + Drizzle then I should be able to use a goddamn Blaze Blaziken. I know banning Speed Boost outright isn't an option because Ninjask is so shit even with it. But I am buttmad I can't use one of my favorite pokes at all without dealing with faggot legends.

PS: Is it possible to get a Female Speed Boost Blaziken yet? I just want one for my in game team.

Smogon is a necessary evil. They do essentially what Nintendo and Gamefreak SHOULD be doing. Regulating their own metagame. In that capacity, they're doing a pretty okay job, all things considered (At least better than official Nintendo tournaments. VGC rules are a hot mess). They make some silly decisions (Why not do a complex ban on Blaziken+Speed boost instead of just banning Blaziken full stop?) but on the whole, their system works. It keeps the highest amount of pokemon competitive as possible so if someone's got bros who can't shake it in OU they can take their team to UU or NU and thrive.

The bad part is... the community. I don't know what the upper management at smogon is like. Perhaps they're lovely people, but GOD. The vindictive neckbears who slurp up their greasy pan drippings are the worst of the internet (Present company excepted). If you thought the Cloying Karenfags and Genwunners here were annoying, you haven't even BEGUN to see what a true tourneyfag Smogon Copy-paste warrior is like. I'll take /vp/ any day. At least some of you have a sense of humor.

The only thing doubles has over singles is that the fights go faster so they fit with Officially sanctioned time schedules easier. They're not any more or less strategically viable than singles, and the lack of tiering in VGC keeps pretty close to ~90% of all pokemon in mothballs.

Personally I want to see Triple Battles more often, but I appear to be the only one

Basically everyone hates each other and you can't go more than a week without some bullshit drama because someone upset someone else. That's another little irony. It takes a LOT of creativity and strategy to effectively take UU and lower pokemon into OU. Using nothing but OU mans basically marks you as a scrub using copypasta sets for easy wins. Karenfags SHOULD be attracted to this possibility of being good enough at teambuilding and mindgames to take something suboptimal into OU and winning anyway. That's basically what Karen was talking about. Real pros win with their favorites, because it takes a pro to spin their favorites into gold.

Some pokemon are just out of fucking luck, though. Farfetch'd will never be good no matter how many people love it

I honestly just dislike how the pokemon fanbase has become a huge orgy of number crunchers who seem to only care about stats and what makes a pokemon viable for competition. Yeah, I know better than to bring a damn rattata to a vs. match because it's a terrible pokemon, but at the same time I see people whining that they want to use Pangoro but "I can't, because it's stats are shit!" Who cares? I personally plan on using Avalugg on my team. Yeah, it's pure ice, slow as hell and built as a physical wall, and with it's weight + weakness to fighting Low Kick is going to be devastating, but I like the big guy, and I'd rather play with pokemon I'm fond of than some that I don't like as much because their numbers are better. If you wanna use Pangoro, do it. Having the best stats/ivs/evs/nature/whatever is one thing, but frankly I don't see the fun in spending months breeding a perfect killing machine and making myself hate the game for taking so long. I'd rather play with my bros and enjoy the game. Hell, I might even win a match or two just on having a good moveset and a bit of luck. Stop making pokemon into some kind of mathalon. I'm here to bond with my bros and go on an adventure with them, that's all.

I was actually around for almost all the bans they did in B/W (though I don't follow smogon anymore), and one of my favorite examples of their incompetence is the Excadrill ban.

When it was happening, many people complained that most games ended in "Excadrill vs Excadrill speed ties", and that was just unacceptable to them. But, they didn't seem to realiz e that NO ONE FORCES THEM TO RUN SAND.

Some people said that "Drill is so good you're forced to either run him or another weather". Let me mention that the game is still about weather even after all these bans. But, you weren't really forced to run weather. People on smogon mentioned "counters" like Gliscor or Rotom-W, but the focus on them misses a lot of issues.

First one being that Drill can't really set up SD anywhere, and without it, many Pokemon can take on it. Another is the existence of priorities like Mach Punch and Aqua Jet. Prankster Tailwind is something I've had success with, but no one mentioned it as a safeguard against Drill. Same with Trick Room, which makes pretty much all of the so-far banned Pokemon irrelevant.

I could go on, but who the fuck wants to read an essay? It's not going to revert the ban, anyway.

I know accuracy is allowed. -1 accuracy is the same as +1 evasion though. It's just an example to show that even though +1 evasion is only a small boost, it's still capable of making you miss 5 attacks in a row.

What are some of those? Forretress? Blissey? Jolteon I guess...

I actually got to first place on the ladder when Excadrill (and all the other now banned stuff) was allowed, so I find it even more puzzling. I didn't use any special preparations either. Simply, Drill lost to me, because he couldn't set up SD on any of my Pokemon.

About Double Team: people here seem to be assuming that a +3 boost just comes out of nowhere, and then the opponent has to react to it. But in fact, not only do you have to drop a moveslot to use DT, you have to use it a few times before it gives you a significant payoff, and that's just not going to happen in this offensive game. If you think it will, then please give some examples where it could. Give a Pokemon's set, what it'd be facing, and how is it going to setup those double teams.

But I don't see this as anything other than a diversification of the game. It would bring back the kind of defensive play style that people have wanted for a long time. It's still suspectible to things with Roar+recovery for example. So you spam recovery until your roar hits. Or PP stall with something like Pressure Dusclops. Again, isn't this the kind of thing people have wished for?

To say that one should be neglected while the other upheld is dumb. Nintendo should be having different cup types for different battle types, or at least alternating through their stuff instead of simply building their stuff to pander to a singular format.

It was tested. That's what smogon does. They don't go "hurr lets ban this" and it's done. They test the shit out of it. It just so happens that the evasion clause testing was so absolutely conclusive that they haven't bothered to revoke it since gen 3. It has been brought up from time to time though.

You are also vastly underestimating what a +6 attack does. Skarmory would at absolute best be 2 shot. That gives you maybe 3 or 4 turns to pray your phaze lands.

Playing against evasion is not fun. End of story.

An electric rodent team probably would rarely work, but I've had GREAT success with a Mono Electric team in Gen 4. It's probably the best monotype, because it has immunities to its only weakness. Also, people don't tend to overload on the same resistances, so after their one ground type is gone, you're free to spam Thunderbolt, and win. I might try to recreate it for B/W if I play competitively again.

Smogon has really hit rock bottom in gen 5. It seems they can't keep up with the complexity of the game anymore. Should just stick to Nintendo's official ruleset and stop making things more complicated than necessary IMO.

Because as it stands, accuracy reduction is easily checked, and probably will only net you some tempo, while evasion requires the opponent to use things like Swift and Aura Sphere, which actually heavily benefits certain pokemon (like metagross and zapdos who can survive without being 2hko'd by those moves and be able to set up and start sweeping).

The evasion clause may have been necessary in the past, but it's not anymore. They did a trial run without it in ubers, and it was found that, shock-horror, the game doesn't break if you use minimise.

The reason the masses vote for its banning is because of the reasoning "it adds more luck-based content", not that it unbalances the game. Personally, I see no difference between moves with a 10% freeze chance, or the chance of full-paralysis, and the possibility of missing.

So yeah, Smogon's banning of evasion is a bunch of people not wanting to deal with a balanced part of the game, and the justification of 'mah balance' falls flat.

Climbing the ladder to get the voting requirements is pathetically easy and every idiot who knows the basics of competitive battling is a potential voter.
Most of the time they'll vote to get that particular pokemon they find annoying out of OU or to keep it around if it suits them better.
This became obvious when that moron who voted to get Lando-I out of OU came out on GameFAQs.

These right here basically answered what I suspected was the case.

With Ubers, there are pokemon that exist who have sheer potential to take out everything in 1-2 hits. DT isn't going to work in a meta like this. An effective DT User needs a few things to get shit done:
-Decent speed with alright bulk or great bulk alone
-Good offense or the ability to get to good offense
-The ability to tank Always Hit moves from other things in it's tier (Read as: 3hko or more)
-Some form of recovery capable of mitigating what you do take.

Without those tools, a DT/Minimize user won't be able to work well. Of course with the lack of pokemon like Kyogre and Kyurem-W (Pokemon that can 1-2 shot everything in the meta), DT/Minimize has a lot more viability due to not having a natural soft counter to it.

Ubers is a weird place because of all the OP shit that gets in there.

except that isn't true at all. First off, you have to choose your leads. In VGC you make your team of 6 pokemon, and its shown to your opponent in team preview and vice versa. Then you have to choose four of them to use in battle, and two to lead. So, you put half your team on the battle from the start, and if you choose poorly, half your team can be swept in a single turn. You have to really think about it. Then, your opponent could be bluffing a TR team or a physical team to b8 your intimidate users in to abuse Defiant, there's just so much that can happen. Not to mention the basic increase in complexity from having four pokemon on the field. Its another level of play. You wouldn't understand until you tried it

And well i returned to Gen 4 battling with Salamence and Deoxy-S banned? Also when I quit we were testing Latias and Latios and IIRC no one really found Latias broken... And shes uber. Shit, when I was playing a lot of shit was being tested as suspect.

Well now I understand why you guys hate em. "Its too much for me to handle so ban it!" During my time the only thing I remember being banned was Garchomp... I didnt care if he got banned or not and could definitely see why he was. But why everyone else?

IIRC bans these days are a group poll done by a group of people who get a certain rank on their servers, but the threshold is so low that everyone who isn't a complete 13-year-old casual gets voting rights.

I remember reading the thread for when they were testing Landorus, the thread itself was dominated by "Landerous is fine in OU, lrn2play, why the fuck are we wasting our time with this", but he got banned anyway because the poll said so. Fucking stupid.

Why? What Snow Cloak abuser is broken? The closest is Froslass, but I would call her "annoying", not broken. And even then, she's nowhere near as annoying as Jirachi.
