I haven't watched Origins yet (never was really into the Pokemon show past like second grade), but everyone kept making a big to-do about it. I thought they were exaggerating its "seriousness" as proponents of the maturity of kid-centered cartoons are apt to do (look at ponyfags), but then someone linked me that Charmander scene.

Holy hell.

Does no one else find this... Uncomfortable, and not at all a good thing? It always seemed to me that the appeal of Pokemon was cheerful adventuring, but that clip made all the animal abuse jokes actually relevant.

The fuck is going on here?

Well, there's also the fact that when a Charmander's flame is put out, they die. The Charmander in this scene had his flame slowly diminishing, meaning he wasn't that far off from actually dying.

The whole scene was out of place with the entirety of origins. When I was a kid I watched the anime from the beginning, and this scene in origins was just uncomfortable

I saw origins yesterday without ever hearing about this scene, and yeah it was totally uncomfortable. Charmander sounds like it's in so much pain and squirtle keeps it tackled on the ground and holds its bite, it's very reminiscent of dog fighting/animal abuse. Plus the thing with the tail, you immediately think of him dying.

I missed watching those shows as a kid. Me and my brother would just sit around eating our dinner while watching National Geographic on mute and seeing animals get torn to shreds by predators, while we would make our own dialogue that mainly consisted of a vocabulary you'd expect from an 8 year old.

I try that now and people just look at me weird and wont play along...
