And going for OPs question I agree, this should definitely have been a series considering there are many important points that should be expanded upon. For example, Red and Giovanni's fights are important...but they never detailed their actual first encounter on the Casino.

And considering the excellent work they did with Brock and Giovanni, the rest of the Gym battles and the Elite ones would have been great to watch.

I understand that the current anime is aimed at children, which is why Ash hardly evolves his pokemon so that they remain 'cute' but seeing Red in Origins with fully evolved pokemon looked so fucking cool, wish Ash would get his shit together.

I've only watched the first two episodes but I can already say that it looks like they kinda pussied out and toned down the violence. While that neck bite was a little more than the anime would show, the second episode was more tame, which is ironic considering that death was the theme centered around it. And by skipping the gym battles and giving Charizard the megaevo stones, all this tells me is that the special was just a thinly veiled X/Y advertisement. Oh well.

That said, I'm glad Pikachu and those three comic relief villains aren't anywhere to be found. When I was nine and watching the Johto arc, I was already tired of the formula between them. I'll watch the other two eps but I don't expect to be wowed by them at all.

I felt like 4 episodes was too little. It seemed like Red didn't even understand type advantages or bonding with his Pokemon, yet all of the sudden hes skilled enough to beat everyone. More episodes could have made his transformation more obvious.

Although I think at most, it should be like one season or a 13 episode deal. It has nowhere else to go after its finished with its story.

At least in the regular anime, they actually show people training their pokemon.
I'd have loved to see an episode where he learns about breeding and certain types of training and whatnot.

I dunno. At the Giovani fight, he just kinda chucked his Pokemon at him. He got his shit handed to him the first time he fought him, the the second time, he still just hurdled his Pokemon into the field. Im told hes stronger and has a better bond with his Pokemon, but he seems to be doing the exact same thing he did the first time, yet wins now.

Im not sure Im convinced. He sent a flying/fire against a ground/rock and his electric type out at it. And he kept using Scratch attack.

Red's Elite Four team was really solid for an in-game Gen 1 team and the only reason people think it's stupid is because they're thinking about the newer games.

Well it was pretty strong offensively and was one of the first true Swords Dance sweepers, but it was really frail. Didn't help that Rock Slide and Blizzard were really common.

Things I really liked:

I liked how his Rhyhorn had Thunderbolt to cover its Water weakness, but the rest of the time it's just using Horn Attack or getting stupidly lucky with Horn Drill.
>Charizard beats things because of the power of love. Look, I get that bonding with your pokemon is important and I'm not saying to get rid of that, but why couldn't Charizard have beaten his counters with cunning or something? Fire Spin Blastoise until he's weakened then finish with a critical Slash. Using Earthquake to hit Rhydon super effectively. I dunno. Be creative!

In R/B/Y your speed determined your chance to score critical hits. This meant that Slash had a 100% crit chance for Persian. Against a weakened team with its Rhydon, Golem, and Gengar already taken care of, Persian could easily mop up.

Of course, this is why Tauros is the better normal sweeper. With Blizzard Tauros can 2hko a healthy Rhydon or Golem and the same goes for Earthquake against Gengar. He had no counters. Nothing could switch into him without a chance of getting 1 or 2 hko'd

Generation I had a wildly different way to calculate Critical Hits than later games: they were based in part on the user's base Speed, which is why the metagame was dominated with fast Pokemon.
To use Persian again, this means that Persian's Slash attack has a (115 × 100) ÷ 64 ~ 179.7% chance to score a critical hit.

Blaze's boost isn't anywhere near strong enough for Charizard's Fire Blasts to do the things it did. It also never implies anywhere in the special that pokemon have Abilities or that Charizard becomes more powerful when it's health is low.

I mean, we're talking about anime here. Things are very rarely subtle in anime. Everything always gets at least one or two characters remarking on the sidelines "Waughh!! Charizard special ability just activated! Could this mean that there's still a chance?" followed by staring with their mouths hanging awkwardly open making weird gasping noises.

Persian sweeps are indeed hard to do which is why Snorlax and Tauros get more play. Doesn't change the fact that Persian is leagues above other offensive normal types in R/B/Y. Persian would be far from dead weight on Red's team, though the use of both Dodrio and Persian seems redundant to me.
