I always love my starter, I pick up a new game, begin an epic journey and they are the first to join me on that road. It is why I am so dissapointed at how poorly most of the starters perform once I start battling other trainers, I am not saying that ever one should be a speed-boost blaziken (holy fuck no) but just...Decent, something where I do not feel like I am punishing myself by including it.
It is why I have been quite encouraged by what I have seen of Delphox so far, (confirmed moves: Flamethrower, Psyshock, Psychic, and Shadow Ball)
and for abilities, I want to see Levitate, hopefully with a form change to her riding a broom :)
