They're all rich to some extent. How else could they have gotten a rare starter pokemon? Not every 10 year old can have that.

Not every starting trainer can get them anyways. Either all the protagonists are rich or their mom just has connections with the professors.

Most of them live in a small town with a laboratory, so it makes sense that it is connection based. The only ones who didn't if I recall correctly was in Gen 4, where the professor chose to give them the starter on his own

I don't understand why your character is still locked to tiles and 8-directional movement.

They can keep designing their town with the tile layout while giving us free movement with the analog stick.

Not really.
X and Y uses actual 3D models for everything.

You can change the camera angle too. Gen 4 and 5 were pseudo-3D, by making them look like they were 3D with some nifty props and tricks.

The difference is Gen 5 and 4 had 3D overworld. X and Y have 3D everything.
