How did passing down moves through breeding work in gen II? He could have bred two foretress that knew spikes and the pineco would have known it if breeding mechanics were the same as now.

Pineco learns Spikes at 43 in Gen 2. He just didn't evolve it until then.

Incorrect, it evolves into Dragonite at 55.

Lance has THREE Dragonite. The highest level amongst them is 50.

He also has a Aerodactyl with Rock Slide, which back in G/S was impossible.

And in HGSS at one point you team up with him for a fight. He has a level 40 Dragonite.

Back then I thought was scripted and thought that was the greatet thing ever.

for me every pokemon would level up depending on the trainers skill, the player in-game represents an average, some people may take a lot longer to train a pokemon and virtuoso's like the gym trainers might get a pokemon to evolve much faster.

On a real note I've never played anything after Gen 2, I bought a used copy of Emerald and this guy was in a cave you had to use dive to get out of. Dive is a pretty crazy mechanic and I didn't really get it at all.

If you breed two of the same Pokemon with the same move, the baby will be born with the move if it can learn it.

Additionally, checking the GS pokedex, Pineco learns Spikes at lv43, so he'd just have to wait until lv43 to evolve it.

Lance on the other hand...

So if you keep a Pineco till level 43 I thought you could only either gain a move or evolve. I didn't know you could do both. I always evolve for the better stats and just wait for the move.

Actually, it's very possible. So long as a move is part of the child's level-up set, they can inherit that move from the parent at a much earlier level.

If you evolve a Growlithe in gen 2 at level 50, it learns Flamethrower at level up, evolves, and then learns ExtremeSpeed.

Also if you evolve a level 1 scyther (obviously, meaning in gen 4) it gains Bullet Punch and various other moves on Scizor's learnset. Counting breeding inherited moves, thats over 10 moves learned before ever seeing a battle.
