If you live in Pacific time you will actually be able to down-lode the game at 9PM

And yes all major Nintendo games are made available for down-lode at Midnight of their release date.

Smaller games are generally put up on Thursday some time around noon.

It takes up 1.7GB, around 13,600.

I should really get a bigger SD card, I'd rather have all my game digital since I don't need to change carts that way.

My thoughts exactly. I don't like the idea of my pokemon being mixed in with all the other games on my SD card.
Although I do literally have EVERY other game on my SD card. That way, I never actually have to switch Game carts until a new gen of pokemon, since pokemon is the only game that I care enough to not throw into the SD card pool.

I was able to download Fire Emblem at midnight release day. So, I'm positive Pokemon will go up at midnight too. Getting digital release myself.

Oh, and also for the ones that were worried about losing your save data, you can just back it up on your computer and copy and paste it back anytime you need/want to.

How do you do this? Which specific folder?

Because it can't just be the whole internal file structure (the same way you'd move data from an old SD card to a new one) because that includes system files/other game info and other information.

Can you move specific save folders safely?

It doesn't work for Animal Crossing and it sure as hell won't work for Pokemon, or else they will have effectively given you unlimited copies of the game.

In AC, it rewrites your game file and save every time to make sure it only accepts the most recent file.

Once you do you just cut and paste it like anything else.

I just back up the whole card anyway every so often. Might do it every week once Pokemon hits.

Avoiding the whole multiple save idea, you're still able to have an alternative method of making sure you never lose your Pokemon save.

That was my feels when making the decision to go digital, regardless, your save will be put on the 3DS, not the cartridge, so you'll need your 3DS anyways.

I know a lot of stuff goes on the card itself... but what precisely is saved /to the system/, because I really can't figure it out? I mean is it like the save files or something?

it really depends. you could test it yourself, turn on your 3ds, take out the sd card, and see what still remains. my games, and saves are all on my sd card. I don't think you can get it any other way

you won't have to. that works fine. however, with certain games, if you try to have "multiple" saves such as, taking this one, and saving it on your pc, and creating a whole new one, on the same sd card, your old save will no longer works. it'll only take the most recent.

Huh, I wonder what the point of listing system next to SD card under the data management is, then...

I'll go ahead and get another SD card then just for Pogeyman, I don't feel like deleting all of my other games, especially not Awakening.

yeah i wanted to upgrade as well, just to prepare, but you can still just copy everything you have now, and throw it into a safe folder on the pc. come back to it when you want to play those games again. if you want to save a few bucks on a SD card

Yes, just go to the 3DS - 3DS XL Transfer FAQ page on Nintendo's website and follow the instructions. It's way easier than you think.
