The competitive types seem to agree that Froakie, Bulbabsaur and Wi Fi Torchic is the best combination because it covers so many bases.

But, really, it's up to you. If you pick Froakie, the rival will pick Chespin, so having Charmander on tap to burn his ass might not be a bad idea. Then again, maybe you want a bulky tank to compliment your Froakie, in which case you may roll with double water starters.

It doesn't really matter. Choose what makes you happy.

Why not just go with the starter that was your first if you started out in gen 1, or when you played fr/lg.
It seems like everyone is choosing Charmander because of Mega Charizard X and Y. Charizard has always been the favorite of the Kanto starters, so if you want to choose the less mainstream option, go with Squirtle or Bulbasaur.
