Big outlets like IGN rate based on what their readers want to hear. They gauge that and give what they think people will be happy with based on the hype/etc.

Of course, on the other end of the spectrum you got the frustrated small outlets rating based on the exact opposite; what the above people do not want to hear. This results in giving awfully low scores to big hyped titles, and a lot of angry clicks from people who did not want to hear what they said. They do this regardless if the game is good or not.

The gaming journalism industry is simply rotten to the core.

Probably because it's going on overall story and premise, and at first glance it's the same as ever - you get given a Pokemon and then you're like 'welp, better go beat this eight gyms, and I'm sure bad dudes will try to start shit at some point, guess I'd better stop them'. 'Story' to these people means muh Last of Us.
Like most video game story isn't tripe anyway, and by extension these 'reviewers' going 'hurr story not good'

The only way to get a good score for stories in game these days is to have something get nuked and have your character makes choices that "affect" the outcome of the game.

Oh yeah, that sounds interesting, and it is more than that, but even as far as video game stories go Pokemon isn't very deep. We were in the thread going 'OH SHIT TEAM FLARE GOAT TEAM', but it's more because what they were doing was impressive and cool and they had big machines. Most of the dialogue was cliched as shit.

You know what I mean. It's the big 'we are doing something evil for no raison' thing. Honestly I wasn't getting the details, Josh(?) was just posting flashes. Consolidating all the souls of Pokemon together to release Yveltal? Kind of like the instrumentality project, I guess. I bet Z's plot, a mixture of that and the eternal life stuff will be much closer to it. Using both to literally create the Third Impact.

I know that review scores are obscenely skewed, but are we really bitching about a game getting 9/10? Unless you're someone who takes it as a massive personal attack when a game they pin their identity to doesn't get 10/10, a 9/10 should still say "extremely good game that isn't quite perfect". Most of us haven't played it yet either.

Also IGN is the fucking Fox News of games journalism, why the fuck would anyone who knows what a D-Pad is even care what they think?
