What Origins focused on first and foremost was the story of Red's maturity and growth as a trainer, and this was best conveyed through his first gym battle and his encounters with Team Rocket and Giovanni as well as the final showdown against Mewtwo. The gym battles and champion battle could've been extended, but omitting them in their entirety wouldn't have really defeated the purpose of the special; even then, we at least got a glimpse of those battles.
I feel like there are a lot less people bashing it for the story it was trying to tell and a lot more bashing it simply because it wasn't what they had personally preconceived it to be.
