Ash had conveniently forgotten that it was the middle of summertime, and every rock and twig causes significant pain to poor Mantyke, who desperately tries to buck her master off of her back. Ash, however, likes a challenge, and manages to hold on pretty well until a low-flying Spearow comes directly toward his face. His immediate reaction is to throw something at the offending cranium-seeking missile. The first thing he grabbed was Venipede's pokeball.
The ball opens on contact with the Spearow, sending both pokemon careening into Ash at high speeds. Ash is thrown from Mantyke's back, and the four of them tumble down the mountain, eventually crashing into the water at high speeds, where Ash loses consciousness.
When he awakens, he finds the fainted Mantyke and Venipede lying on the beach with him, but the Spearow is nowhere to be found. Ash dusts himself off and moves on.
