So I'm getting Y and this is going to be my first Pokemon game since Crystal.

I'm going to choose the fox starter.

Dude, the fox is confirmed to get STAB Psyshock and rumored to get STAB Fiery Dance. It has ways to weaken physical and special sweepers. It probably has the highest BST of this gen's starters and may be the best offensive starter since Blaziken. Unless you have a reason to say that, OP should know the fox is an excellent choice.

My suggestion would be to head over to bilbapedia or serebii and read up on all the mechanics since gen 2 because they are hard to follow if you are just starting out and not 5
