Sure, it works fine for your first 200 or so, but all of them?
From my own experience:
First, FAMILIARIZE yourself with all the jouyou kanji (learn how to write and distinguish them, forget about readings and meaning at first).
Second, learn vocabulary (kanji + kana reading + meaning).
Third, practice writing the kanji from the vocabulary from memory.
I found it so much easier to memorize and retain kanji after I had a vocabulary word I was familiar with to associate it with.
All of this can be done with available Anki decks, too.
