Those differences only come into play when you get right down into the story almost at the end even.

Y definitely is the "edgier" story though. Kinda wish I ordered X instead so I can fight Team Flare with my own Flair

Eh I kinda wanted a darker or as you'd call it "edgier" story like Colosseum/XD/BW*2 to a degree.

In Y they want to destroy all human civilization to return the world to a beautiful, natural state, using a massive cannon powered by the souls of dead Pokemon. Possibly this is connected to Yveltal's death causing the absorption of all living souls into its own Tang Cocoon.

In X they want to destroy all Pokemon so that they can have eternal life, probably using the same cannon, though whether the cannon is a life-granter in X, or whether they aim to cause enough destruction to awaken Xerneas who can grant them eternal life, nobody's said

in my personal estimation the massive cannon that swallows Pokemon souls and wipes out human cities is probably the same in both, and what changes is their reason for firing it, but I don't know for sure.

Depending on what pokes get retconned, I might actually rock a fairy only team. If Milotic and Whimsicott/Lilligant actually end up being fairy, it mite be p cool. Only problem is the lack of physical attackers, only Granbull and Mawile seem to fit the bill.
