That still works? We already now, that the game saves the region set in the 3ds at first play. See the latest Vivillon info thread.

It should also be mentioned that changing region afterwards will list you from a different country, but the setting in the gamesave with the original region is unchanged if you change it lateron.

Changing just a single byte in the game's header is what determines the region lock.

It's very possible that they decided not to region lock it because of either
1. Worldwide Simultaneous release
2. Game is multilanguage in all releases anyway.

Just tried this with a PAL copy on my US 3DS and got a Game Card could not be read error. The logo shows up when you stick the card in just like OP's video though.

That was my thought exactly. As soon as they announced "global launch" I thought, oh because of region locking, duh. Pokemon being region free makes sense, since in the Iwata Asks for X/Y they basically said they were making the same game for everybody due to the language select option.

The only difference is the regional rating.

Nope. It makes more sense than ever now for it to NOT be region free.

The reason for game regions is to force customers to pay a specific price for a game, rather than importing it from another region. When a game is in all languages, there's more reason than ever to have that lock.

Yeah. I remember in the recent Iwata ask they said they only made one version of the games instead of separate ones for every language.
Go to your options, you should be able to change the language at will.

So, 3DS is like PS3. Both are region free, but the games can be locked. The bad thing is, in PS3 the standart is region free with a few exceptions of region locked games, and in 3DS the standart is region locked but the games can be region free (so far, only Pokemon). Hhmmm...

I don't actually have a 3DS yet. Just how late am I? I might be able to browse Gamestops and find a used 3DS that isn't updated.

As a poorfag this is pretty huge news for me, as I couldn't play more than a couple games otherwise.

The flashcard is pretty expensive, has no online support and you can have only 1 game on the SD card.
New systems ship with 6.1.xx so you'll need to get a used one if you want it.

This is fuckin neat for me, because I have both JP and NA systems. This means I can carry the game with me no matter which 3DS I decide to take out and about.

Though I assume swapping consoles will upset SD card data that might exist like StreetPass (does this game even have StreetPass?).

Because you may be onto something with the save file thing. Maybe it IS region-free, but once you boot it it locks itself to the system. I kinda wanna try my copy that I get on saturday with my JP 3DS but I'm afraid it'll ruin itself...
