New patterns, everyone! The pokébank one is Icy Snow, and there's a currently-nameless new pattern from Brazil.

The distribution continues to baffle everyone, but has to do with climates. Probably.

The guy in Germany with the shiny Vivillon had the Marine pattern, just to throw everyone off further. Normal wing pattern, white body.

I think it's still climate based. Different parts of Germany gave different patterns, in the same way different parts of America have given different patterns.

I got it guys. It's not based on Climate but rather temperature.

What if there's a special instrument on the 3DS that determines a locations temperature? That way Mexico got a sun pattern and josh got a polar pattern. That would also explain the different patterns in Germany.

Most the tests were conducted pretty close together, right?

Japan could get Meadow during the day and Elegant at night, Canada could get Tundra during the day and Polar at night, etc.
Germany's odd case of three could relate to early morning being a separate time.

I'm curious, since this is climate based, has anyone been able to check to see if they evolve differently if factors where you are at are different based on your 3DS time?

For example: It evolves into say Garden when it's hot in your climate, or Polar when it's winter/snowing in your climate.

Is it by 3DS region that it bases your climate? I'll be on a plane for nine hours next week, I'll evolve a Spewpa over the Atlantic ocean to see what happens if the factors can change like that. If not, I'll probably get Meadow no matter what.

From what a UK guy said, it seems like it may be based on your regional setting at the start of the game.

He set his to Poland to check this and he eventually got the Continental patterl, unlike the Garden pattern we've seen other UK guys get.

It's a bit obvious that these are distributed by country mostly, and probably a little to do with stereotypes and/or climates of said countries. the UK is known to have a lot of countryside, hence Garden, finland is quite cold and snowy, hence the snow pattern.

That's what I guess, anyway.

What we know so far.

It's based on your 3DS country
3DS from Spain + Pokemon X bought in Austria = Marine
You can't change your 3DS region once you started the game

When you get Scatterbug from another region it will evolve into the pattern from that region
3DS from Germany + Scatterbug from Portugal = Marine
3DS from Portugal + Scatterbug from Germany = Continental

When you breed them, either the male or your 3DS region assign the pattern
Male (Continental) + Female (Marine) + 3DS from Germany = Continental

US-Ohio/Illinois: Modern

Counting in from the top of the wing, Elegant/Garden are two pixels. Modern/Continental are three.
In the middle section of the top wing, there's also a difference in whether the deepest pixel is the top or middle row.

Of course it can be argued that Meadow and Marine might be different patterns, then, too!

It's weird because the patterns sort of made sense (Finland got Snowy, Norway got Tundra, Brazil got Tropical, Mexico got Sun, etc.) therefore we can't rule out it's related to the climate

BUT Germany got 3 patterns. So maybe it also depends on your state/province

It's based on your 3DS

Some countries get more than one design but apparently it's still related to their climates (you won't get Icy Snow in Brazil?)

You can't change your 3DS region once you started the game

We don't know yet what happens if you change your region and start a new save

We don't know yet if it's hard-coded or based on your settings

When you get Scatterbug from another region it will evolve into the pattern from that region

When you breed them, either the male or your 3DS region assign the pattern, we are not sure yet

Perhaps it's based on the location of wherever you last connected then? The dex entry does suggest locations then, and it would seem to encourage people to get the other countries, so the ideal thing would be it changes when you travel somewhere different

You know, #666 has been more fun than any of the other new pokemon.

It'd be cool to have lots of variations of many pokemon (e.g: Kecleon colours, Arbok patterns, Smeargle tail tip colours, Sableye gemstone colours, Roselia flower colours, Chandelure flame colours, Grass pokemon flower variations, etc).
