I got a 3DS XL (the special red XY one) for XY because I wanted to play the game on a larger screen, but I've had an original 3DS since last year. I hope that people buying the 3DS for XY will consider trying some other games for it, though, otherwise they will be missing out.

Honestly, so far this year (bound to change) the 3DS has had the best lineup - and certainly the best exclusive lineup out of the major consoles - The Last of Us did a considerable amount to fourth Sony's claim, but Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, SMTIV - all killer apps - and tons of niche stuff for JRPG and strategy genre fans (myself) - like Etrian Odyssey, Dream Team, Project X Zone, Monster Hunter, DKC Returns - and Bravely Default on the horizon - not to mention the 10+ killer titles from 2011-2012. This system was a must-own a long time ago.

IMO, depends on where you live - there's a big community in Toronto and having it on a portable makes for a better experience - I mean this it was originally how it was designed to be played (PSP) - but I'd own both if I had got around to buying a Wii-U yet - now that's a console that is still waiting for a killer app (SSB)

yeah - just the most obvious ones, really - unless you absolutely hate Mario - 3D Land is still the best 3DS title and possible the best handheld title of all time. Mario Kart is also a great experience (though lacking compared to Mario Kart DS- another candidate for GOAT handheld game)

A lot of people only upgrade their systems for a specific series of games. I only bought the 3DS back when I did because of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. It just worked in my favor that there was new Zelda and new Pokemon too.
