The preceding version is the canon version, and it does factor into my decision.

Red, Gold, Ruby, Diamond, Black, Black 2 are all the canonical continuity.

I wanted Mewtwo Y, but Xerneas is cooler and Mewtwo X has proven itself to not be shit with 194 ATK and still a crazy high 150 SpATK if I really wanted to still use Psytrike although that's stupid with so much ATK already.

But Mewtwo Y is easily more versatile, it's not fair.

I got Y because my friend preordered X first and I didn't really care at the time.

I don't care about legends at all but I'm glad I got Y because of Skrelp and Charizard Y. I don't really care about anything else.

I preordered Y the instant I saw Yveltal. Xerneas is really cool too but this is motherfucking Poke-Rathalos. Skrelps evo is pretty damn awesome too. I was also hyped for Spritzee until its evolution turned out to be an ugly drag-queen.

And like apparently everyone else in the universe, I was under the impression that most of my friends were getting X.

Historically, I pick whichever version has more version exclusives I like. Traditionally the kind that I want to use in my main playthrough right away, so that I don't have to hassle to get them.

I like Xerneas and Yveltal both pretty equally, and a lot of my friends are doubling down this Gen, so I picked Y because I like birds and I thought Spritzee would be a flying doctor.

When I was younger I would always let my younger brother get the "cool" verison i.e. Red, Gold, Ruby, etc. He stopped playing when Gen IV hit but I keep the pattern up just in case. This go around I think I would have ended up with X but I picked Y just because.
