I've played some SMT, Monster Rancher, and Spectrobes, which are all pretty good.

Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 for GBC. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker and Joker 2 for DS.

They have really cool breeding systems. Though the GBC games are far better than the DS games. DWM2 is the best of the bunch and has the most replayability and things to do post-game.

To a lesser degree: Dragon Quest V for DS also has monster recruiting. But the game is a bit hard to find and it doesn't have breeding.

Digimon World 1, 2, 3 for Playstation are worth a checkout. Also Digimon World Dusk/Dawn and World Championship for DS.

Dragon Quest V is one of my all time favourote games, but yeah, the monster catching is kinda tacked on, and not a big deal. But it came before pokemon, so you cant blame it.
As for the Digimon games, do you know if any of them are on PSN?

If we're going back into the realm of DWM (which was fantastic) I would also recommend Azure Dreams.

It was never really popular, but the objective to tame and train monsters in order to reach the 40th level of a mysterious monster tower and discover what happened to your dead father was really interesting.

Also Jade Cocoon 1 and 2. Battles in JC2 play out like complex rotation battles and the story is really intriguing.
