Conceptual design does not always translate to aesthetic design.
Mega Mewtwo Y is the perfect example of this.

In fact, I'm a professor at Yale that teaches high level design classes, and next semester I will be showing Mewtwo Y as an example of how to not design a humanoid creature in one of my classes.

It's still not even close to being the strongest story-wise, though. Game Freak really went full retard with the Creation Trio's and Arceus' power levels.

As someone non-competitive and as such uninformed, in the tiers where Arceus is permitted, how broken is it really? I can tell it has crazy stats and moves, but it strikes me that there's stuff out there strategy wise that could be better. Or is it a guessing game regarding which plate it's holding until it comes out and you can tell?

He's in a jack of trades type situation.
He's still immensely strong, but not unbeatable.

Arceus isn't really that broken just pretty powerful. Usually for every function (physical sweeper, special sweeper, tank, support, etc) another uber can probably do it better. The problem is he can pretty much do everything and is wildly unpredictable making him hell to counter sometimes as you can never be certain what he's going to do. Plus the whole "any type" thing means you can't just slap a counter move on one of your pokemon.

thanks guys. surprised lugia is so low in usage since i hear it's wall of the year all years. also a bit surprised groudon is that high- i mean he's good, but i guess he's top 5 because you need him for any sun team. palkia, dialga, darkrai, arceus and rayquaza make sense too. i don't know shit about how genesect works though; is he just scizor or steroids/acid?

mega mewtwo X has equal if not better utility to Y in the metagame. Yeah Y beats X one on one, but the ubers metagame lacks a good fighting type, besides arceus fighting. Mewtwo X's close combat will be metagame defining.

In that case it was somewhat justified I guess. In every case and in every permutation, something with Moody and the know-how to use it right was the absolute best option in any situation, even in Ubers tier. The only thing Smogon truly hates is for things to have no counters, and Moody had no counters.
