It filled the Lucario role of gen 3 despite being a starter. It got to the point where I knew what it was before I even knew what Torchic was since it got that role near the end of the original series among other things. I loved how the 3 starters all appeared in this for example, yet Blaziken appeared as well.

Popularity power. Competitively Swampert was always the strongest, but Blaziken left the biggest impression on the fandom.

Popularity power is the sole reason Mega Evolution exists, that some less popular guys got it is entirely incidental.

For me it was the merit of the upswing from Typhlosion I guess. Typhlosion was great and all but a bit boring. Then comes along this bad ass chicken who doesn't take shit from no one and is fucking dual typed with FIGHTING of all God damned things. It was just unexpected awesome.

Blaziken getting speed boost is one of the worst things to happen to the game in recent memory and this kind of bias is repulsive. I hate mega evolution as well and dislike how XY is going out of its way to appeal to people's nostalgia.
