Help a fellow Pokemon fan here.

So i have a modem and a router for my house. I can connect the internet to my 3ds xl just fine but the thing is, is that i have to change my routers security to wpa to trade, battle and even after all this there is this message that says unable to connect to nintendo wi-fi how do i fix this?
