The skates are seriously the worst thing about this game. My options for movement are to either have borderline uncontrollable movement almost as bad as the Gen V bike, or break my fucking thumb using one of the worst dpads ever made. I wish I had an XL right now just so I could at least use a decent dpad.

There's no really good way to use the L Button and the D Pad at the same time on an XL like you could on older DS models. It's kind of painful any way you do it.

To be able to use both the L button and the dpad at the same time, you basically have to painfully contort your hand. I can't even figure out a way to comfortably use the dpad on its own on the original 3DS because there's no space to grip the system if you try to use it in a comfortable position.

It's not just about L and dpad together, it's about the fact that not only is the dpad stiff and awful to use, but it's in a terrible position. At least on the original 3DS.

The main problem with the system is that the weight is weirdly distributed. Especially on the XL; to be comfortable at all the buttons would have to be near where the hinge is, it's ridiculous. I actually play a lot less videogames than I used to now because I'm mostly a handheld fan but holding the 3DS takes too much effort.

Are the skates always on your character model after you get them, or do they just appear when you're skating? Couldn't care less about 'uncomfortable' d-pad movement, I've spent the last few days playing Etrian Odyssey on an XL with no issues, but having them always be visually displayed would rustle my jimjams.

How the player interacts with the game is a huge deal, it's why mega man has the same jump arc an movement speed on every game of his. Everything about a game is colored by the control scheme because you can't get to a gorgeous view in an RPG and appreciate the graphics if the camera controls are too fucked up for you to get to see it.
Defaults matter. Controls matter. And options matter. This is just the way of the world and this always-on-roller skatessans d-pad is probably the worst addition to any Pokemon game since I started playing.

Look if you like it that's fine, I don't really consider it an improvement over pressing Y with the skates on hot key, a single keystroke is just not worth all this backlash. So if you like it, that's that. But not everyone does and there's is no option to go back to something we're familiar with or something we're more comfortable with. Not even a way to change key bindings! I've never encounters such a user-interface wall in any game I've played.

I think the point is that they offer an easy way to move quickly and freely like a bike, but without the hassel of equipping and equipping it. It doesn't really work as well as they probably imagined, but I see what they were trying to get at. Like any control scheme though, you get over it. The D-pad isn't THAT uncomfortable, and there isn't much of a reason to not use the skates very often.
