Is it worth getting an XL? I hear it looks more pixelated because the resolution doesn't scale properly. Plus it's less portable.

I suppose it technically is more pixelated, but IMO it's barely noticeable.

For me, it was worth every penny.

agreed. feels way more comfortable to hold than the original and the huge as fuck screen is worth it. Don't notice any resolution issues but 3D does suffer if that's a thing for you still

It depends on your preferences. I can't stand the XL's screens. It looks like straight shit to me. But I have several friends who prefer it, and even think the screen is superior to the original 3DS's.

I don't get why people mention this all the time. I have an XL and have no problem fitting it in my pocket. It doesn't bulge out or anything. Sure the original is smaller, but I wouldn't say the XL is cumbersome in any way.

OP here, this is what I'm worried about. I'm really keen to details like pixelation, I'd rather play on a lower resolution if the image looks smoother. But a bigger picture is obviously better if it doesn't hurt the quality too much.

The aliasing/jaggies are much more noticeable and the screen has a yellow tint you'll only notice if you compare it with the original side-by-side. You can notice upscaled text looking blurry in some games, though it's still readable.

Apart from those, I don't notice the upscaling THAT much (it could be worse, see DSi XL), I love having bigger screens, and doesn't feel so small to hold.

It's the same res on a bigger screen. Of course it's more pixelated. It's like the difference between a 21.5" 1080p monitor and a 32" 1080p monitor. I don't know if I see it as less portable, but it's definitely more comfy.

The resolution on both models is the same, hence lower pixel density on the XL, hence more apparent pixels. If that's not your cup of tea, get the 3DS.
