I didn't really have the mental capacity to do that when I was a kid, but I do it in gens II-V now. The fact that Red is an actual character now that didn't get thrown away ruins it for first gen.
I have always played as the girl in my second run-throughs, however.
I honestly think you're looking too deeply into the reasons behind these choices. Some people just say "Sure, I'll be the girl/boy. Who cares."
