They're Shintos when they're children so that they can enjoy all the festivals and myths about different youkai.
They're Christians on their wedding days because Japanese people are obsessed with Western culture, and it's become fashionable to have Christian weddings.
Then in their old age they become Buddhists because they're old and contemplative now.
Apparently the thing about Japs having three religions is a pretty popular joke/anecdote in Japan.
It's not really that Christianity is a popular religion, it's just that having a Christian wedding is the 'cool' thing to do.
