A lot of people overall plays female in games regardless their gender. Because is more appealing for them, the costumes they can wear (Fanservice, cute, or have more variety), or just because they got the choice.

I've always picked the male character simply because I like having the OT (my actually name) consistent with all of my Pokemon.

I do enjoy customization in games. Is it difficult to obtain outfits?

New Leaf could do it because the player model is very simple, so there was not much work to do for crossdressing.

In here however both trainers have their unique anatomy traits. So means double the job. The female trainer has pants but still she has the ones made arround her.
