you have to be connected to the internet.
the other pokemon are actually pokemon that belong to other people that come and visit.

The items inside, like the cake, the chairs etc are random gifts that other people's pokemon give you over time.

What do you guys get for gifts from visiting Pokémon? I usually get the basic pokepuffs and rather plain items for decorating (egg cushions) or wallpapers. Does the amount of things you have laying around have any effect?

I'm pretty sure it depends solely on what kind of pokepuff you set out.
I usually set out the ones with frosting and toppings, and I get some cool furnishings and more frosted pokepuffs.

For me it doesn't cut off when I close my 3DS, but it does when I enter home menu, which is annoying when adding people for trades.
