Yeah, if you don't turn the XP all off you will be at least 10 levels ahead of any trainer's pokemon, mostly because there's a huge gap between the first and second gyms and the gym levels don't really adjust for it. I actually really like that the level progression is done so that you will be in the 90s' by the end of the postgame if you use one main team, but I hate that the trainers pokemon aren't adjusted for it, gym leaders should have more than three pokemon. You know difficulty has taken a big hit when the team leader only has four pokemon and all are 10 levels under everything you have.
Shit, my HM slave is lv65 and I'm not even at the last gym. My main pokemon are in the low 70s', I just did what I always do, catch everything I can find and battle every trainer.
