Why are Mega Evolutions so underused in the main game?

I just beat the Champion and never got a real chance to use one outside of the 3 Megas the game directly gave me and. Are the Mega Stones all post-game or just really well hidden?

Most of them are really well hidden. Post game your mega bracelet is upgraded to let you see megastones glowing on the ground. Check serebii for locations. Oh, and some guy sells the two kanto stones you don't have, but not the opposite version charizardite. Also, a few megastones are for the pokemon exclusive to the other version. For instance, you find houndoomite in Y, but houndoom is X only.
