So are there ANY decent customization options for the guy? It seems almost more beneficial to just be a reverse trap with the female.

Game Freak probably thought that the girls would be more interested in character customisation than the boys (since that's the case in the real world). Obviously they forgot to think about all the boys that wish to be little girls.
