>>14601414You put them in and they may or may not make an egg, it all depends on a Pokemon "egg group". However, any Pokemon will breed with a Ditto. So, the ideal strategy is to use a foreign Ditto with say for example a Feraligatr, with the hopes of getting a shiny Totodile.
You put them both in the day care and ride along the straight line in front of the day care. Notice how every day care ever has a long staright line in front of it, it's for hatching eggs because eggs hatch depending on how many steps you've made with the egg in your party.
