After acquiring badge #6, I've decided I need a decent electric type on my team.

How does Helioptile stack up to Pikachu and Mareep? I was going to use one of those but now I'm thinking of giving the new regional electric type a chance.

Plus I like reptilian Pokemon.

He's fragile as hell. I don't know about his evolution but my Lvl 42 Helioptile is getting KO'd by level 26 mons.

Helioptile is Top Tier.

Good speed, Good special attack, great electric attacks and his movepool provides decent coverage. He even learns Surf!

Only downside I would say is abilities aren't so good, but they have their uses. Dry Skin is probably better.

No it doesn't.
How he performs is pretty reliant on what Ability he gets:

Dry Skin: He's now immune to water, heal HP in rain and all his Electric attacks have 100 Accuracy. Sunny weather damages him. Still can't take hits well, but Parabolic Charge hits EVERYTHING and restores HP from every opponent hit.

Sand Veil: unless you're in a Sandstorm, this is completely worthless. Nice to have if you rock out with T-Tar, though.

Solar Power: Boosts Sp. Att by 50% in sunny weather...but still drains his health. Otherwise worthless.

Actually you know what? Fuck the newer rodents, the real Pikachu clones are Mareep, Electrike, Shinx, Blitzle, Helioptile, and their evolutions.

They follow Pikachu in spirit, an early electric type that's useful throughout the whole game, albeit not perfect.

Fucking Pachirisu and Emolga. Riding off Pikachu's success trying to look like him.

The others do their own thing and they're great at it.

Try maxing it out, there will be an immediate 10 or so points to the stat. Then it will grow at an accelerated rate. EVs round out so that you get bonus stats at level 100, it's kind of random up till then, but it still makes a huge difference

Heliolisk has low HP, Attack and Defense but monsterous Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense and Speed. With the ability to learn Surf it's one of the best Electric-types out there in my opinion. Plus it's only two weaknesses, Fighting and Ground, are majority physical moves so it's pretty well balanced too.

He's definitely worth it once you evolve him. His was pretty shitty when I first caught him. Getting KO'd left and right, and his attacking power left something to be desired. I evolved him in the late 30's, taught him Thunderbolt and Surf, and watched him kick ass and take names later. I just beat the E4 and he was one member of my team who held his own very well.

Shit, I've even used him in a few just-for-fun online battles and he's kicked ass. His speed and sp.att are awesome. Couple it with Volt Switch and he can be very annoying.

Don't give up on him man. He's shitty when it starts off, but trust me, once he evolves he's top bro tier.

252 EVs = 63 extra points in that stat at level 100. Meaning at level 50 you'll have an extra 31 points, at 25 you'll have 15, etc.

He always felt incomplete to me. Like a Gabite unable to evolve into Garchomp. I considered replacing him, maybe get some other Pokemon to get rid of his Normal-type. Even after evolving he just didn't feel right.

Hell naw, this motherfucker won battles I never though he would. He KO'd shit with Nerfedbolt easily. His goddamn Parabolic Charge hits like a truck when it's just a 50BP move.

This guy may not be able to take a hit but I'll be damned if he won't kill half your team before you can even touch it. Teach it Thunderbolt and watch the world burn. Teach Surf and flood it afterwards. Hell, you can even run fucking BULLDOZE on this guy for a bit of coverage. Shitty Attack stat but the reduced speed might come in handy, if you run into a NPC with Deoxys-S for whatever reason.

I guess it's safe to say that Heliolisk has gained his spot in the team.

It doesn't really matter since you get that one fairy move as a TM from beating the fairy gym which is almost as powerful, and even fairy wind can take out stuff weak to it in 2 hits before then.

You should evolve him asap, you get all the good moves through TM/HM anyway.

Thunderbolt/Parabolic Charge/Surf/Focus Blast is what I use. You can substitute PC for T-Wave if you need some support when capturing Pokemon.
