So how are Megas looking from a competitive standpoint? Is it worth sacrificing the item slot? Do any Mega evolves stand out as being particularly OP?

So far, everyone is creaming their pants over MegaGengar. In practice, it will be eaten alive by Kingdra, Excadrill and their friends.
I think we will end up with one mega stone per team, especially since stall seems to get some megas, too. (Well, at least MegaAggron and potential other megas released later.)

Since mega is now a thing, and a powerful thing at that, i see pikachu getting one, even though only final evolutions get them... or Ash refuses to use them and still beats others who do.

Some of them definitely will be, ie mega zam and medicham. I'm curious what the smogon rules for megas are going to be, predicting a new tier

I see this as being likely. Although Gengar, Blaziken and both Mewtwo's are going strait into Ubers.
