They went for a pretty different style with the "boss" music in X/Y (that being gyms, E4 and team flare). It's a lot more percussive with less distinct melodies. I agree, most of it is kind of boring compared to previous gens.

Even though its near impossible to match BW and BW2 OST's X and Y has really weak music, its has its bright spots but alot of it is average or just plain bad

In terms of music

Gen V>Gen I>Gen IV>>>Gen II>Gen VI> Gen III

Not even saying Gen III is bad because of "hurr durr trumpets" the music is just plain awful regardless both R/S/E and FR/LG

Only battle theme I felt fit and I genuinely liked in XY was probably the Team Flare Leader's battle theme. VS Xerneas/Yveltal was okay too.

Its terrible, though. Theres no fucking music to it, its just the same beat a million times. It sounds like the BGM to Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion. And that music was shit. There was no good music in gen VI, except for the E4, Mewtwo, Flare Boss, and Champ themes.

Are you implying he hasn't been behind many of the past battle themes? He's had a hand in every game's music except BW2's, and it wasn't until HGSS that the music team expanded to be more than just him and maybe another guy or two.

It barely has any melody at all. Its just an ambiance piece that doesn't really work well since invoke the same catchy intensity that other gym themes do. E4 battle has the same problem, but not quite as bad.

Legendary theme is decent. Reminds me of a less energetic version of the Pixie theme from DPPt.

Kanto legend theme wastes a minute with a really bland techno composition before getting into the Gen 1 throwback. It reminds me of the type of remix you'd hear on an amateur YT music channel.

I can't speak for everyone, but my problem isn't that Gen VI's battle music is too different, but that a lot of it is either unfitting for its context or sounds like a watered down version of songs from earlier in the series.

Ghetsis battle theme sounds "different" but it works given the context of the fight. XY's gym battle theme sounds like a wifi lobby theme that they used in battle for some weird reason.

Huh, at least this one is pretty good. Not as intense as the other champions (HOLY SHIT DAT LANCE), but it's fun enough.

Same. B2 and W2 were the most "complete" pokemon games ever made in my opinion. Big step up from the original Black and White in everything except story.

Hopefully they can achieve the same thing with Z now that all the hard work (modelling and animations) is done.

RBY's sound front actually had a hollow ambiance to it, so a lot of themes gave off a "creepy" vibe.

I completely despise every other arragement of it, it's a boring theme and it makes me feel nothing.
However, Gen I's instrumentation just gave it the perfect vibe and really set the mood of eeriness.

Gen IV had some good music, one or two excellent pieces, and the rest were ok. My favorites have to be Route 8, Anistar City, and Zygarde's theme (and team Flare had some fun music) but Colress's battle theme is GOAT and gen 5 has the best music out of all of them.
