>>14656958There's a picture floating around, but it's a little too complicated to get into fully.
The basics aren't too hard to grasp, however.
Every pokemon has something called IVs, one for each stat (Health Points, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed). These are hidden values that range from 1 to 31, 31 being the best. The higher the IV of any one stat is, the higher you can push that stat up. When you catch a pokemon or when you're given an egg, the IVs of the pokemon are determined (note the IVs are chosen for eggs when you're given the egg, not when it hatches). Although they're totally random, there are ways to skew the odds in your favour via breeding, which you'll have to get the details later.
The other important aspect of breeding are what called EVs. EVs are points that your pokemon accrues from battling other pokemon and defeating them. When defeating a Magikarp, for example, your pokemon receives 1 Speed Ev. After 4 Evs of the same type are earned, the stat point goes up. Each pokemon, however, has a limit to how many EVs they can earn and any EVs earned after that are lost. The most EVs a pokemon can have of any one stat is 255, and the most they can have in total is 510.
