There's a metaphor hidden in the plot of XY.
At the end of the game, thanks to his battle with the protagonist, AZ is able to remember his love for Pokemon. He represents the old fans Game Freak is tyring to bring back into the series with XY, being able to reignite their love through an experience with the new generation.
Lysandre and Team Flare meanwhile, represent the blinded old "fans" who refuse to give the series a chance anymore, believing it's too far "lost", and just want it to die out now so their memories of the series and their "ideal" for it can't be tarnished any longer.
