Do you think there will be a day when Gamefreak realizes the way to keep a steady growth pattern in terms of levels is to give trainers more pokemon instead of having each trainer have only 1-2 pokemon each until post game/elite 4?

The only full team of 6 was the obligatory magikarp team. Fucking Gym leaders have only THREE POKEMON. This is fucking outrageous.

The thing is, even if you have six Pokemon while most trainers only have two-to-four, the number of Pokemon altogether completely outnumber you. The reason few trainers of teams of six is for gameplay balance.

Remember how pissed off people used to get about constantly being forced to battle Cheren and Bianca over and over in B/W? Well multiply that by a hundred. It would get annoying really fast.

Maybe not a full team of 6 for random trainers, but definitely 3-4 Pokemon once you've gotten 4 badges under your belt.
The Rival maxing out at like 4 Pokemon felt a bit silly, especially as you were told when you'd be facing them in advance. If you're going to do that, give them a bit more oomph to their team to make up for the lack of surprise.

The Gym Leaders only having 3 sort of makes sense as leveling scaling wise, you're probably supposed to be below their Pokemon levels, and I dunno, Gym's being a Gauntlet which you're supposed to do in one go just feels more natural, so it also makes some sense in that regard, too I guess. Though, I'd personally prefer it if later Gym Leaders did have more.
Of course, the EXP Share really fucks the level scaling in X/Y completely.

That's the another thing. Ever notice how the more Pokemon a trainer has, the weaker they tend to be overall? Particularly near the end. While trainers with only a few Pokemon also tend to be at higher levels.

Gym Leaders can be up to ten levels higher on average than any other nearby trainers. It would actually be really annoying to take on a full team of six, unless you're the type to grind endlessly on wild Pokemon.

Furthermore, you do realize that these games are made to accommodate five-year-olds, right?

Because the game is more a battle of attrition than anything.

If every trainer had a team of six high-leveled Pokemon, you'd probably run low on PP pretty fast. And if you didn't stock up on items beforehand, it'd be even worse.

And EXP is another issue. Obviously, the stronger the Pokemon the more EXP you receive when you beat it. Keeping high-level Pokemon low in numbers is another way to keep things balanced.

The gyms are such disappointments. They look really fucking neat, but the trainers in them are all complete pushovers, just like every other NPC in the game. Then you get to the Gym Leader.
I'll just say that if you can sweep an entire gym leader's team with an eight-inch-tall puffball kissing it over and over, you need to make the game harder.

I understand that they're dumbing the game down to appeal to kids, but this is fucking silly. Even a 5-year-old would beat this shit without any problems.

Catch one of every pokemon you see while fleeing from repeated random encounters and you will already have an easy as fuck time if the exp sharer was on.

A single Honedge is pretty much all you need to sweep your way to the elite four. Shedinja is probably the most OP pokemon in this gen.

This entire game has been WAY too easy. The only time in the entire game that I came even close to blacking out was fighting that reverse battle guy because I was way too stoned. No grinding, just the general exploring, and the entire game is a cake-walk. I get that its intended for kids too, but couldn't they do something easy like a difficulty setting that just adds +25% more stats to enemies or something?

I was having a pretty challenging time, even on some trainers, until I was somehow ten levels ahead when I got to the 4th gym. I'm considering grabbing my secondary starter from the box and raising a new team from scratch. I left the exp share on because I'm finicky about everyone's level's being the same, I have no idea it boosted EXP growth so much.

Even without the extra levels enemy pokemon never have any EVs. Even if you're playing normally and getting random EVs in every stat your pokemon will be vastly superior to everyone else, especially in the later game.

Exp share should NOT break the game. You shouldn't have to gimp yourself to make the game challenging. Tons of RPGs give exp to all your party members and they still manage to be difficult. Exp share isn't the problem. The enemies are.

No, that's not really adding much difficulty. It just makes the other team objectively better than yours.
They need to have a difficulty mode where the moves are changed, as are strategies.
Blaze Black and Volt White did this in a reasonable manner. They were challenging, while only a few times I'd consider them unfair.
I think that would just be a better route to take, because I'd love more challenge modes, but I don't want just beefed up enemies that become weaker once I catch them.

I don't dump anything. Everything I catch, I fully intend to use.

How I normally do things is simple: Carry six Pokemon, go to the next town. Check the PC and withdraw the current lowest-leveled Pokemon I have with the highest Pokemon in my party after my starter. Rinse, repeat. Occasionally, I might have one or two other mons that I have with me all the time, but everyone gets used often.

I don't go on wild catching sprees. It's rare for me to fill out even one box, unless I'm breeding.

The point is that because catching Pokemon gives EXP, You're essentially gaining EXP faster than you would in other gens.

I'm boxing my Kanto starter and the Torchic and the Lucario, and I've decided against using Honedge because apparently it's broke as fuck ingame.

That's a pretty good method. I have this awful habit of boxing a pokemon I intend to still use, then completely forgetting about it and it sits there at lvl 42 for the rest of forever. I just.. never go to the PCs.

Amie results in a lot of fun shit, so i'd recommend it, if you're at ALL into the roleplaying aspect of playing the game. But yeah, it basically turns your party into essentially traded pokemon. Plus a few other bonuses (that dont seem to affect online play)

Well, I just sweeped the fourth gym with Delphox. And with one move. Again, the gym was really neat, but with every trainer having one/two pokemon that can be one-shot with Mystic Flame, it's genuinely sad. And fuck all this "make it harder for yourself" bullshit; I want to be able to give it my all and get defeated every once in a while. I haven't even been blacked out yet, and I don't even use Revives.

It's implied in lots of places that Gym Leaders hold back on trainers in regards to how many badges they have because they aren't supposed to be hideously challenging.

I'm pissed that didn't make a comeback like in HGSS where you could call up Gym Leaders for tougher rematches postgame.

In fact, the "Gotta catch 'em all" slogan was solely a US thing, something they eventually got rid of when they realized that this was never the intent in the anime.

And at any rate, catching 'em all would be pointless in the anime since that would mean that the vast majority of his Pokemon wouldn't get sufficient screentime. Hell, just rotating between ten Pokemon kinda screwed them over in terms of characterization.

If you were an actual trainer with actual Pokemon, how far do you think you'd get? Like, having to rely on actual real-time tactics, where it's possible to get rid of Stealth Rock with methods other than just Rapid Spin or Magic Bounce.

Hell, most of us probably wouldn't even be able to get to the next city before giving up.

they really don't, though. I don't know why people insist on throwing away a spot on their team for one. Cut is only used a couple times, and it's just to get some hidden items. You only need to use strength once per boulder, and then that path is cleared forever, and Surf is a useful move that your pokemon should learn anyway.

Hell, implied went out the door in B2/W2. Cherin at the start says something along the lines of "If I had my regular partners..." after you beat him. It's pretty clear he's not ALLOWED to use his full team, moreso being he's the lowest Gym Leader on the totem pole.

That said rematches should always be 6v6.

Or alternatively to make things harder Gyms could have a use limit. Sure, Gym Leaders is only allowed 3, but then so are you, or such.
