Red was pretty underwhelming, to be quite honest.

He power levelved his one mon to Level 100 so that everything else was shit, and he was helpless without it. He had no grasp of strategy, just relying on Charizard to bail him out because it's so stronk. His E4 team was a joke. He only got through the Mewtwo battle because his OP Charizard got an even more OP X/Y tie-in at the last possible second.

Sure, he's better than Ash, but that's because he didn't have as much time to be a fucking moron and wear out his welcome.

Not always, but they often overlap.

The way I see it, Red isn't a Gary Stu so mach as he is suffering from Shonen MC syndrome, beginning as a scrappy rookie intended to be be part of a team/having a lot to grow but ultimately just ends up OP.
