Protean is greninja's ability. It changes his type to whatever attack he's using, so he has STAB with any type.

However, with middling attack and pitiful defenses you have to play him smart. Especially since if you aim for an obvious weakness they'll just smack you back and knock you out (if they survive)

It's potent, but his attack and special attack are only decent/good compared to the great attack stats of most OU pokemon.

He's also fragile as shit, so you have to be damn sure that the enemy won't be around for the retaliatory attack (especially since many pokemon carry coverage moves to be SE against their weaknesses)

The way I see it he's supposed to be a late game closer.

He's left out of the action until it's time to mop up, and then his guaranteed STAB on all his coverage moves is meant to guarantee he can do good enough damage to finish them off one hit each. His speed is good enough to outspeed almost everything too, so you would probably be aware of the exceptions.

If you're running greninja you're realistically using protean, and that would mean your type was variable.

Mind you, Greninja has fragile stats so he's more about attacking and killing and no so much taking the retaliatory strikes.

Chesnaught is SUPPOSED to be about sponging up hits, yet he has a terrible 4x weakness to a type used by many pokemon which basically invalidates it.

What I like best about these threads are the cognitive dissonance.
When you're attacking Chestnut you can bring up all the ways every other RU can counter him, but when it comes time to remember, "hey, he can learn some decent counters to those types himself" you shut your brain off. You stop one step short of the logical conclusion. You should strive to expel this bias. If it happens here, it happens elsewhere in your life.

I'm not arguing for his competitiveness, I'm just saying you're going out of your way to emphasize every weakness at the expense of his strengths, and doing the opposite for his counters.

The only flying moves worth mentioning in the metagame are Acrobatics and Hurricane, both of which are limited in distribution and incredibly easy to predict.

Meanwhile, it resists some of the most common attack types in the game (water, electric, rock) and is only really afraid of fire and ice.

Chesnaught isn't GOAT, but it's still pretty damn useful.

I don't think you understand how Protean works.

Protean makes the user the same type as the move it uses, not that its opponent uses.

ie, it uses Grass Knot, it becomes a Grass type, it uses Ice Beam, it becomes an Ice type

I've seen different people say different things about whether this happens before or after the attack though.

To be honest, i don't hate him. I wanted to give him a chance, as i actually loved chespin. But unfortunately, Greninja is better Competitively AND Design-wise (This one's pure opinion, mind you). And Delphox ain't too shabby gameplaywise, although its design is 2tame4me.

Or if you use some of his decent moves. That means you predict a Psychic and flying change.

So basically, unless he uses hidden power fire, he can be stopped by Gavantula with a choice scarf.

Only if he using Sludge Bomb.
He can learn Sludge Wave while Gastly. Its the same acc, +5 BP, -20% poison chance. If Fatnut ever became OU no sane Gengar would keep using bomb for the poison.
