Also by far the best starter is Greninja. He's got the most interesting ability and the most interesting moves. The magician theme of Delphox doesn't translate to any viability and trying to make a grass type a tank was a doomed attempt from the beginning.
Protean especially is great because you could feasibly pump him full of HP and then rely on the priority of Quick Attack or Shadow Sneak to ensure nothing hits him for SE damage. Or you can be more typical.
Either way, Greninja turned out to be the most fun of the three.
