Granted I agree that they have shitty personalities and teams. But I thought it was a good concept. Made me feel like I wasn't just going on a journey by myself like I did the past Gens.

I wouldn't mind seeing Gen 7 feature 2 or more rivals again, provided they flesh them out a lot more than they did here.

Were you in the Pokemon Generals on /v/ back then? Then you'd know exactly what I'm talking about. There wasn't this weird culture of Starter Cliques, Smugleaf, Broakie, etc... People just played the games and only complained about valid things (the mandatory area with defog, lack of fire types) but it was never labeled worst gen or anything.

No you pleb, I'm saying that some of the shit implemented during the 3rd Gen, both in-game, and choices in merchandising/other media, seriously harmed the franchise. Do you honestly believe that the instant drop in sales for future releases is a coincidence? That FireRed/LeafGreen SHOULDN'T have sold more than Ruby and Sapphire? Everyone I know was dropping Pokemon by the day back then, because it "Didn't feel the same". And don't give me the "You were growing out of the Poke'Craze" bullshit, because me and my friends were all hooked again from Gen 4, and I even stomached through Gen 3, honestly thinking Pokemon would never be the same again.

That's exactly the bullshit I'm going to give you. Around here everyone quit Pokemon before R/S even were released. That's right, the initial fad died down during gen2. The people who continued playing were bummed out that they couldn't transfer their pokemon to the new games, but that's generally where complaints ended.

The games, the whole Pokemon franchise, have always been marketed at kids. This didn't change during 3rd gen.

Seriously, even Silver took care of his Pokemon to an extent, Blue/Green a shit, treating his Pokemon like tools. Even ended up getting his Raticate killed. And lol Barry, the spaz.

Wally, on the flipside, started as a sickly boy who couldn't even catch a level 5 Ralts on his own. Then, by the end of the game, he was a rival on your tier who could have easily taken down the Elite 4 in your place. That growth. If they do make a Hoenn remake, I hope they develop his character some, show him grow throughout your journies.

I like that there was actual antagonism between Silver and the player in Gold/Heart Gold, which made it so satisfying to kick his ass all the time. I actually really liked having a rival I didn't like, and he got some actual character development.

I only rate Blue higher because he's the one who started it all and the only one to actually make Champion. Nostalgia/10

Wally gets a high rating because I admired him. Here's this weak, frail kid who drags himself up from nothing to become an endgame hardass with a team that would have wiped me out if he had been running a full six-mon team.

I shit on Brendan/May because they are quitters. As many times as I beat Blue or Silver's ass, they never gave up. They kept trying again and again. Birch's brat was half-assed.

Green was excellent, but a lot more could've been done with Silver throughout Kanto and he never completely got over that edgy faggot thing he had going (maybe it's because I named him Asswipe in every single playthrough, it made his faggotry much funnier). The "friendly competition" bullshit that started in gen 3 killed off the whole rival thing for me. Instead of getting any degree of excitement when your rival shows up, it's more along the lines of "get off my screen and stop wasting my time".

That's what I'm saying though, even though it made the oceans interesting as hell, there was often nothing to be found underwater except for deep sea pokemon. They really dropped the ball on that, the rivals, the motivation behind the two teams, and end game content.

Also, Callum/Serena go down a notch for ditching Fletching then replacing it with Altaria. They could've been a challenge with Talonflame.

Forgot to mention, all rivals have a full team of 6 at level 70 the first time you fight them in the place they finally end up at. Each time you fight them their team's levels go up by 5 until eventually reaching 100. Your rival trains to be stronger than you after losing to you, so you have to go train and be ready to fight stronger Pokemon. At level 100 the rival is the absolute hardest opponent to beat in the game, barring Red in GS/HGSS (who will also level up to level 100).

I probably will in Z. I usually play once as each gender if I own more than 1 game from a generation. Curious what you guys think of my rival changes though. It's possible each generation will continue to be remade every few years if Game Freak thinks they can milk more money out of them. Shauna was alright. If not just for her cuteness points and the fact that she's actually somewhat involved in the plot.
Calem/Serena was a waste of a potentially interesting character. They could've done interesting things with their jealousy, like making them use underhanded tactics to win or outright attacking you to try and prove they're better or whatever. It would've added a nice conflict between the protagonists. But nope, they just angst for like, 3 lines of dialogue and get over it, going back to their boring-ass old selves.
Trever didn't do jack shit, his pokedex comparing shit was annoying, and i'm sure it's literally impossible to lose to him when comparing Pokedexes. I beat him once with fucking 12 Pokemon registered for that area.
Tierno was so fucking retarded that it's sad. Every line of dialogue is about dancing, yet NONE of his fucking Pokemon have anything to actually DO with dancing, and is just useless overall. They mentioned that he's super insecure as a trainer, and if they built on that to add conflict and have him shut the FUCK up about dancing every now and then, he could've made an interesting character, but nope, he's a piece of shit through and through.
Mostly everything about Gen 6 is really good, but I can see they really didn't try very hard at all with the plot and characters.
