Except Lysander had an actual reason. He wanted to make the world "pure" and "beautiful" again, even by means of nuking the world and deleting the existence of Pokemon.

Yeah, it's probably either Cyrus or Giovanni. Both of them were defeated by something entirely unpredictable. And Giovanni had great success before Red came along. He was a gym leader, rich, clandestine leader of a gang. Giovanni's only real problem was Red who was a complete X factor when it came down to it. Nobody could've expected a 10 year old kid to do what he did. His other problem was the fact that he was surrounded by incompetence.

Ghetsis is another one that came close, but his problems were a lot more avoidable. And even when he got a second chance with BW2 he still took a shot in the dark. A lot of things stood in his way and he still tried. All it would've taken to stop him the second time is either N or Hild/bert returning or Colress double crossing him. It's also clear that Ghetsis himself isn't that great of a trainer and relied on N to take down the E4 and the Champion the first time. If Alder, Iris, or Cynthia would have gotten to him before Nate/Rosa then he would've failed as well.

They first appear in-game trying to clone Fossils, so they knew about cloning from "somewhere" (Mewtwo).

After that fell through, they went after Ghost types to help catch the abomination they are super effective against. That went to shit. They also abduct Fuji, so they must have a history with him.

Once that's all nackered, they bullrush the Silph building to get a Masterball as a last ditch effort to capture the Purple Franken-Fetus.

Makes sense to me. Otherwise it's a pretty big coincidence.

Because the "take over the world" was an asspull at the very end. The entire game is spent talking about freeing Pokemon, and even all the grunts are led to believe that. And what about legendaries? Mewtwo was a fucking badass lab experiment on the loose. That was pretty cool. This. That's what I loved about Gen 4. Pretty much EVERY gym leader was seen outside of their gym, including one elite four and Cynthia even made it into Gen 5. I loved the storyline of Gen 4 just for the NPCs and would spend a lot of time at the cafe where you could battle them just because they were fleshed out characters.

In contrast, the four fucking rival kids in XY are annoying as shit. The main rival isn't even helpful in double battles.

This is a close one for me, too.

I really liked Colress' scientific approach to unleashing a Pokemon's full potential, but BW2 Plasma gets outclassed by Team Galactic because of Cyrus and his ambitions. Ghetesis wasn't that great of a leader when it mattered.

The inside of my local target looks disgusting compared to Walmart, and the upkeep should be cheaper because Walmart is bigger. But obviously that isn't the case because the shelves are dusty, the selection is smaller, and the food doesn't look as fresh.
