First two episodes of XY premiere tomorrow in Japanese, Saturday in English. Who's ready for Serena to become undisputed best girl?

Here's first ep in Japanese, no subs but come on, it's Pokémon. Not hard to understand.

I haven't seen the anime for years, but I have a question.

How do they handle Pikachu's power level? Back in the day he was one hitting even the strongest of pokemon, by now he should be level 100 with maxed out stats.

How do they keep the show interesting when the protagonist controls the worlds strongest Pikachu?

In Hoenn Pikachu got hit by a super magnet and in Unova he got raped by Zekrom. Sinnoh he was still pretty strong and the losses early on made sense. Likewise, in Kalos, he does quite well against Clemont and only gets hurt once Wobbuffet uses Mirror Coat on his Thunderbolt.

Hoenn's okay, and DP was fantastic. Skip BW, the earthquake in Japan fucked up its plot and the entire series suffered for it.

I feel sorry for the animators having less than 80 new Pokemon to use. There's less opportunity for making a variety of episodes centering around a new Pokemon.

Pokemon levels typically remain more or less static unless they evolve in the anime.

Thus, Pikachu's general power, speed and endurance hasn't increased significantly since the start of the series. Strictly speaking, the anime doesn't have levels in the same sense as the games.

Pikachu has high electrical output and decent speed but relatively low endurance and physical strength. This is how it's always been and this is how it's going to continue to be.

In addition, in the anime, there are only two visible cues for a Pokemon getting stronger. One is that it evolves, as mentioned before, and the other is that it learns a new move.

Thus, Ash's Snivy, which started off with Vine Whip, Attract, Leaf Storm and Leaf Blade and ended with those exact same attacks without any alteration whatsoever, remained at the same relative level of strength from start to finish. In comparison, Tepig evolved and Oshawott ended up learning Hydro Pump, both of which signified their growths. Snivy started off with two unusually powerful attacks, Leaf Blade and Leaf Storm, so it was considered to be one of Ash's stronger Unova Pokemon earlier on, comparable to Pikachu. Oshawott and Pignite eventually managed to get on its level, so even though Snivy's power level remained static, it's still one of Ash's stronger Unova mons.

Ash's Snivy whole schtick was she's too good for her old trainer. Early (pre-fukushima disaster) Snivy was pretty cool, she almost never jobs her fight and acts like a cool team mom towards the weaker pokemon.

Then post-Fukushima BW series went to shit. It takes like 40 episodes to go from town 2 to Nimbasa. By the end Ash were back to his garbage self

Snivy should've left Ash just like she left her old trainer

Snivy followed Ash because she liked the cut of his jib. He loved his Pokemon and even protected him while putting himself at risk. That's why she faced him head on and why she was happy to be caught by him.

Her old trainer was probably an asshole.

I was sad that she never evolved, though. Serperior's my favorite of the Unova starters.

I was constantly waiting for a Snivy focus ep where her old trainer shows up. They'd probably be a complete asshole seeing as how the reason Snivy went with Ash was because she was impressed by his compassion.

Seriously guys, no one ever said that Gym Leaders HAVE to use their specialty types. Brock had plenty of Pokemon that weren't Rock types.

Normally I'd agree, but I've found it odd that they're actually promoting the whole "childhood friend" thing, and how Serena has feelings for him. With the exception of Misty in the English dub, it's never been this obvious.

1. I think the animators would actually be pretty damn relieved
and 2. It worked fine for the kanto and orange island seasons. Hell they're pretty good because they couldn't just be "pokemon of the week" plots after awhile.
