Instead evolution should be about "strive towards your goals and become stronger for your hard work." The best example is Bagon, who wanted to fly and worked hard until he eventually evolved into a Salamance, proving that evolution actually is a good thing.
This all went wrong during the battle with Lt. Surge. From then on Ash has fucking despised evolution. I'm surprised he ever evolved anything at all.
