This, especially when you're doing a first play of a new game your goal is to try as many pokemon as possible so you want to level them up to be useable. Exp share helps a lot with that.

What the shit, dude? I'm well past the first gym and my guys are barely breaking 20. I've never turned EXP Share off.

I think maybe the problem is people are still playing the game the same way with EXP Share as they would without it. If you look at it as a mechanic that lets you circumvent grinding, instead of something that makes grinding break the game even harder, maybe it works better.

I don't know what I have to set rules for myself to make the game hard. There should be an easy/normal/hard mode settings available.
I literally had to soak exp into HM slaves to make the game more challenging when I had gained too much exp.
I refused to use the lucario, and didn't use the Y legendary in the fight with Lysandre, and boy was knocking that Mega Gyarados down with my under level pokemon satisfying.

Because the NPC's are borderline retarded, they will throw out attacks that make no logical sense. Swapping out killed more of my pokemon than anything.

Yet they are too retarded to realize the game is meant to be played in Set mode with exp share off. The battles arent all one hit kills and you actually need to use some strategy like you would in a battle facility. This makes it feel like you doing something other than pressing A and ends up being more enjoyable.

Problem with Set is that it makes it more annoying to spread out your exp gains since you have to switch pokemon into attacking moves pretty often. Especially in long caves it's not very fun anymore to open up your bag every so often and use six super potions.

Switch set off for grinding and, depending on your preference, for regular trainer battles. Gyms and E4 as well as villain battles and other things like that should always have set on.

There isn't a single game that isn't "hard" if you simply create arbitrary restrictions for yourself. When your homemade rules are creating more problems for you than the game itself is, you're not playing the game, you're playing your restrictions. And even without either of those, the game is trivially easy compared to previous generations. Kids are kids, not complete morons, and games don't need to treat them as such.

I want to use EXP Share because it because it lets me play the game much more organically, where I don't have to check and manage how experience is spread in my team. It allows me the freedom to strategically choose which pokemon I want to use, instead of economically decided which one I need to force to win because it's starting to lag behind in levels.

Or it would, if the game were actually balanced around it existing and being used. Instead I'm given the choice of "tedious grinding but slighting more challenging battles" or "natural progression but face-roll combat."

EXP Share itself is smart design, so I want them to fix it, not give me the option to ignore it.

Yes, obviously if you always use the same 6 Pokemon they will get over levelled pretty fast.
But this gen, there's 450 Pokemon available before even the league. No reason to be only training 6 mon.
Personally I'm at 15 that I am rotating depending of what I want, and that makes the game much more fun.

The game changed brother. You might as well change your way to play the game.

I didn't kill a single pokemon throughout the entire game (except catches) and didn't fall behind until I faced the elite 4 (who are supposed to be well above your level by design).

To fix the exp share problem, there should multiple "modes" to choose from:

1. Original exp share - splits exp between 2 pokemon
2. Current exp share - 100% for fighting pokemon and 50% for the rest (for the casuals)
3. Spread exp share - Spread the exp between the selected pokemon evenly (to prevent giving exp to HM slaves)

EXP share is for people like me who train all their pokemon equally. You have no idea how much fucking Audinos I grinded in BW just to have all equal level all times.
